Dog days of Summer

August 1 – Welcome to the 8th month on the Julian calendar.  Undoubtedly a favorite of Europeans who choose this month for vacation and travel. Not just one week mind you, but an entire month of vacation. Ohhh, to be a European…

At this midpoint of the Summer I sit and prepare for classes. In two weeks, my personal Summer shall end.  I will, once again, become a member of my esteemed group of colleagues and rejoin the workforce.  My first real break from work will come to an end.

What other August thoughts? Shadows lengthen. A long day in Oslo, Norway – sunrise at 4:58a, sunset at 9:47p. – a 16 hour, 48 minute, and 6 second day.  A longer day in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska – sunrise at 3:16a, sunset at 12:45a

Augustus was  the founder of the Roman Empire and its first Emperor.

Lower case august as an adjective means marked by majestic dignity or grandeur.

Oh, August, how I love thee. perseids-meteors-2010-aurora-borealis_24557_600x450
